Mini Environmental Meters

Mini Environmental Meters

Major Tech has made a range of mini environmental meters available to its South Africa customer base. There are four different meters, all designed and manufactured to the high standards Major Tech is known for.

MT90 Mini Thermo-Anemometer
The first device is the MT90 Mini Thermo-Anemometer which is used for measuring air temperature and velocity. The device includes a dual-line, four-digit LCD display with a backlight. It is also equipped with Bluetooth to make it easy to transfer data from the MT90 to the user’s Android or iOS smartphone using the Meterbox Pro app.

The air velocity can be measured in m/s, km/h, ft/min, or knots, while temperature is measured in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit. The MT90 can continuously measure the temperature and velocity over time, providing the user with the minimum, maximum and average readings.

A low-battery display will alert you when the 9V battery is running low, while the auto power-off function will turn the MT90 off if it has not been used for 10 minutes.

MT91 Mini Hygrometer
The MT91 Mini Hygrometer measures the ambient temperature (-20 to +60 degrees Celsius) as well as the relative humidity and displays the data on a dual-line, four-digit LCD display with a backlight. Temperature is measured in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit, while humidity is expressed as a percentage.

The MT91 includes Bluetooth to transfer data to the Meterbox Pro app on the user’s smartphone, while calculating minimum and maximum values over a period of time. The low-battery function warns if the 9V battery power is getting low, and the device is set to automatically power-off if unused for 10 minutes.

MT95 Mini Sound Level Meter
The MT95 is used for acoustic measurements in a variety of environments, from factories to offices to schools. It is used for noise engineering, sound quality control and health & safety operations, and can measure sound in a range of 35dB to 130dB. Readings are displayed on a 4-digit LCD display.

It features a 0.5-inch electret condenser microphone. An electret is a ferroelectric material that has been permanently charged, removing the need for a polarizing voltage to operate the microphone. The MT95 measures both A and C weighted sound levels and includes a background sound absorber.

Running off one 9V battery with low-battery alerts, the MT95 will automatically power-off after 10 minutes of inactivity.

MT96 Mini Particle Counter
The MT96 Mini Particle Counter measures the particle mass concentration in the air, along with the air temperature (0 to 50 degrees Celsius) and relative humidity. Major Tech is the first company to offer an instrument containing a combination of these measurements in one meter, designed to measure air quality as well as for energy saving tests.

The device simultaneously measures PM2.5 and PM10 particle density. PM10 is particulate matter 10 micrometres (μm) or less in diameter, while PM2.5 is particulate matter 2.5 μm or less in diameter – about 3% the diameter of a human hair.

Readings are displayed on a 2-inch TFT colour LCD display and data can be transferred to the user’s smartphone via Bluetooth. Sampling time can be set from 30 seconds to 5 minutes and the data collected is automatically saved to the instrument’s memory, which holds about 5,000 measurements.
The user can also set the automatic power-off function to shut the instrument down after 3, 10 or 30 minutes of inactivity in order to save power on the 3.7V Li-Ion battery.

K2007R 1000A AC Clamp Meter

K2007R 1000A AC Clamp Meter

The K2007R 1000A AC TRUE RMS clamp meter from Major Tech is a testing tool that permits current measurements on live conductors without interrupting the circuit. The K2007R is an indispensable addition to the technician’s toolbox as its 33 mm diameter tear drop jaw makes it easy to work in tight spaces.

More than simply a current meter, the K2007R offers three functions in one:

  • A True-RMS current meter. AC is represented as a sine wave with changing amplitude, which means current measurements can vary at different points in time. True-RMS (root mean square) converts AC signals into similar DC signals and this provides a more accurate AC reading.
  • A True-RMS voltage meter.
  • A resistance meter. Measured in Ohms, resistance a measure of the opposition to the passage of current through a conductor.

The K2007R clamp meter can measure AC current up to 1000A and AC/DC voltage up to 600V. A resistance of up to 6kΩ can also be measured and it includes an audible continuity tester. If there is a circuit fault (a continuity of below 90Ω), the continuity buzzer instantly alerts the technician of a problem without requiring him/her to look at the meter.

The ergonomically over-moulded body has been designed to ensure comfort and convenience, allowing safe one-handed operation, while readings are presented on the clear LCD display. Test leads with protective caps are included in the box, along with two R03 1.5V batteries which provide about 170 hours of continuous measuring time.

A low-battery warning is displayed when the batteries fall below normal operating voltage and a sleep function automatically powers the device off after 10 minutes of inactivity.

To assist technicians in taking readings, the HOLD button ensures that the current reading is retained on the LCD display until it is dismissed. This allows for accurate measurements in hard to reach and dark spaces where instant readings may be misread.

Designed to the highest quality standards, this instrument has been tested according to International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61010-1 standards: CAT IV 300V and CAT III 600V. The K2007R is also rated IP40 to prevent the intrusion of small objects.

AC Current Clamp Meter with Data Logger

AC Current Clamp Meter with Data Logger

The MT745 from Major Tech is a clamp meter used to measure the AC current running through an electrical conductor in tight spaces. It permits electricians to measure the current without touching the conductor or having to disconnect the supply from the conductor.

The MT745 includes a large backlit LCD display to make it easy to read the measurement, which can be in the range of 0.5A to 3,000A. Pressing the “hold” button on the current meter will keep the latest readings on the screen, while the built-in Bluetooth communication allows users to send data to the Meterbox app on their smartphones.

The device has a sample time of 200 milliseconds. The data logger keeps 16 320 measurements, and users are presented with an analogue bar graph, and can also view the frequency and inrush current. The MT745 uses two LR6 batteries and to save power the instrument will automatically power down after 15 minutes of inactivity.

The flexible current coil is 457 mm in length. The Meterbox Pro app is available for Android and iOS smartphones at no charge.

Heavy-duty True-RMS Multimeter

Heavy-duty True-RMS Multimeter

The MT1005 is a heavy-duty True-RMS industrial digital multimeter for measuring AC/DC voltage and current, resistance, capacitance, frequency (electrical and electronic), duty cycles, diode testing, continuity and thermocouple temperature.

The device is equipped with a large 50 000 count, 320 x 240 TFT colour LCD display and provides fast A/D converting sampling time, high accuracy, built-in data logging and trend capture functionality. It offers 4mA to 20mA process loop measurements with a percentage reading, and operates in a temperature range of -200°C to 1350°C.

It traces any equipment interruptions and records the events on the device for future review. Not only does the MT1005 trace interruptions and record the events, it can also memorise datasheets and transfer this, and other data to a PC or a smartphone via Bluetooth.

A True-RMS-meter can measure both pure waves and non-sinusoidal waves more accurately. Nonlinear loads, such as variable speed drives or computers can distort waveforms and an average responding meter can be as much as 40% lower or 10% higher in its calculations when measuring distorted waves.

The battery-powered multimeter includes a Li-ion rechargeable battery that provides around 6 hours of operating time, and the AC adaptor to charge the system is included in the box. A low-battery warning will alert users when the voltage drops below the required operating voltage, and the MT1005 also offers an automatic power-off function that the user can set to between 5 minutes and 30 minutes – or it can be disabled completely.

With a wide range of features and double-moulded housing to ensure it handles tough conditions, the MT1005 is ideal for heavy-duty usage. Major Tech also offers a range of accessories for the device, from clamp on adaptors to additional batteries, leads and probes.

Are your lights and lamps EMC approved?

Are your lights and lamps EMC approved?

Have you ever noticed your radio making crackling noises when your cell phone rings? Or have you ever seen waves and strange noises on your television when your mobile is near, and it receives an SMS? What you’re seeing and hearing is electromagnetic interference (EMI).

EMI is a disturbance generated by electrical or mechanical equipment, which can include ignition systems, cellular networks, lighting and many others. EMI in our daily lives is more of an annoyance than anything else, but it can cause problems, such as when your garage door opens when you try to change the TV channel with the remote. In extreme cases it can degrade the performance of an electrical circuit or even stop it from functioning altogether – such as disrupting the functioning of critical equipment like pacemakers.

To ensure that electrical and mechanical components don’t cause any EMI, the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) have set standards that electrical equipment must adhere to. This is in line with international standards on Electromagnetic Compliance (EMC).

EMC standards regulate the electromagnetic emissions from equipment to ensure they don’t interfere with other equipment. The standards are also designed to ensure that equipment is reasonable immune to this type of interference, although one can’t judge what the interference strength of non-compliant equipment may be.

All lamps and lighting products sold in South Africa, must be “EMC Approved”. Unfortunately, in South Africa these standards are not always followed, and many lamp and lighting products are not EMC Approved, which means they may interfere with other equipment, or be subject to interference.

When purchasing these products, buyers are advised to check that their chosen devices are labelled as EMC Approved. It’s also a good idea to make sure the company that manufactured your products is a reliable and trusted brand. You may find a cheap product that looks great, but if it hasn’t been EMC Approved you could be in for a surprise. More importantly, if the product you like is not EMC Approved, it may be worthwhile asking “Why?”.

All lamps from Major Tech have been through the approval process to ensure they meet the EMC Approved standards and can be used anywhere in the world. The same applies to Veti products. Before any lamp and lighting products are made available to the public, they all go through the compliance process and are certified as EMC Approved, allowing customers to opt for Veti and Major Tech products with confidence.

High Powered LED Floodlights

High Powered LED Floodlights

Floodlights are designed to cast a wide beam of light to provide clarity over a large area in partial or total darkness. They are used widely in a number of different situations, from lighting your garden at night to providing light to parking lots and sports stadiums.

Major Tech, a well-known and respected brand in the electrical industry in South Africa provides a range of LED floodlights, the HLF Floodlight Series for use in different scenarios. Designed to the highest standards, the HLF floodlights are EMC approved, which means they do not emit levels of electromagnetic energy that cause interference with other devices in the vicinity.

LEDs are commonly used in floodlights because of the lower power consumption of LEDs as well as their longer lifespans. Each HLF floodlight features multiple 50W SMD (industry standard surface-mounted) LED modules, depending on the size of the area customers wish to cover. These modules are built into a single housing with one IP67, fully isolated driver per LED module to improve the lifespan and light distribution of the fittings. The IP67 rating ensures that the drivers are dust and water resistant, a necessity since they are used outdoors.

The HLF floodlight series can be used in a variety of environments, from warehouses to agricultural holdings, parking lots and even sports grounds. There are four product ranges in the HLF series, each designed to the same quality specifications, aimed at different use-cases:

  • HLF10CW: This is the smallest floodlight in the range. These 100W floodlights produce about 9,000 Lumens.
  • HLF20CW: These 200W floodlights deliver around 18,000 Lumens.
  • HLF30CW: At 300W of power, this range of floodlights delivers 27,000 Lumens.
  • HLF50CW: The most powerful floodlight in the series using 500W of power, this floodlight produces 45,000 Lumens.

All the HLF floodlights provide a 120o light beam angle and are delivered with a 50cm cable as standard. The housing for the series is a heavy-duty aluminium frame that is IP66 rated and the fixing brackets allow for easy positioning of the lights once installed.
